A Refuge at Highland Hall, by Carrie Turansky, is the third book in the Edwardian Brides series. It follows the Ramsey family into the terrifying era of World War I, which brings changes to their lives in ways they never expected.
Penny Ramsey has traveled to London to assist her pregnant sister, Kate, with the eight orphans that she and her husband, Jon, have taken into their household. While there, Penny meets Alex Goodwin, a pilot training for the Royal Naval Air Service, who is recovering from injuries. When Penny and her family return to Highland Hall to escape the dangers in London, Alex finishes his training and is sent to France, where he is injured after shooting down a German Zeppelin. In spite of the budding relationship between them, Alex pushes Penny away, feeling that his injuries are too great to continue. When Penny offers him a job at Highland Hall helping with the older boys while he heals, he reluctantly accepts, not sure that he can stand being in her presence and continue to hold her at arm’s length.
This was a marvelous book. It was a fitting conclusion to the series. I enjoyed reading Penny and Alex’s story, as well as following up on the characters in the first two books. Kate’s twins and Julia’s baby after two miscarriages made the story more realistic.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction.
