Book Review, “An Uncommon Protector,” Shelley Shepard Gray author

An Uncommon Protector, by Shelley Shepard Gray, is the first book in the Lone Star Hero’s Love Story series. It is set near Sweetwater, Texas, in 1867. In addition, there are flashbacks to Johnson’s Island, Ohio in 1865.

Laurel Tracey is the owner of the Red Roan Ranch, having lost her family during the Civil War and just after. In desperate need of help, she takes a chance and pays to free a man she does not know, Thomas Baker, from jail. Thomas, jailed because he could not pay his gambling debts, agrees to work for Laurel for one year in return. When strange and dangerous events begin to take place on the ranch, Laurel and Thomas are unsure exactly how to protect it and keep it running. As they fight the unknown enemy, they begin to feel more than the need to protect each other. In the end, Laurel and Thomas must decide if it is worth the danger to remain.

I enjoyed this book very much.  Both Laurel and Thomas had a level of integrity that one does not often see today. I admired Laurel’s strength in making tough decisions, even when others did agree with her. I appreciated that Thomas did not use his past troubles as an excuse for his current situation.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian romance novels or stories about the old west.

I received this book free from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review.
