Book Review, “The Wish,” Beverly Lewis author

The Wish, by Beverly Lewis, is a marvelous novel.  Set in Lancaster County and Arkansas, it tells the story of a young Amish woman who reaches out to an old friend in order to bring her back into the faith.

Leona Speicher felt like an only child, with only a much older brother, until Gloria Gingerich and her family moved in nearby. Originally from Arkansas, Gloria’s family appeared to be perfect in Leona’s eyes, until the day they suddenly moved. Years later, Gloria contacts Leona. Leona then decides to visit Gloria in Arkansas in order to attempt to convince her to return to the Amish faith. Once she sees Gloria’s new life, however, she begins to wonder if she has made the trip for naught. Unexpectedly, Gloria decides to return home with Leona for a visit. Leona prays that this will be the chance she has been waiting for.

I enjoyed this book very much. I have not ever before read a story where an Amish woman was allowed to travel far away from her home and visit a non-Amish family. Also, I found it unusual for a character to return to the faith without his or her family.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading Amish Fiction.

I received this book free from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review.
