A Worthy Heart, by Susan Anne Mason, is the second book in the Courage to Dream series, following Irish Meadows. It tells the story of an Irish girl visiting her brother in America in 1914.
Maggie Montgomery is excited about visiting her brother, Rylan, in America. She and her brother, Gabe, have traveled by ship both to visit and to help Maggie escape Neill Fitzgerald, a man wishing to marry Maggie back in her hometown in Ireland. Upon meeting Adam O’Leary at Irish Meadows, she originally thinks he is a stable hand. When she later discovers that he is her sister-in-law Colleen’s, brother, she has a hard time following her brother’s orders to avoid Adam. Adam, recently released from prison and unsure how to reconcile with his family, turns to a minister friend to help. But he cannot seem to avoid Maggie, even though he tries.
I enjoyed this book very much. I loved Maggie’s independence and Adam’s attempts to cooperate with his family in order to earn their trust again. Their journey to a deeper faith and a healthy relationship with each other is truly touching. I also enjoyed Gabe and Aurora’s story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
I received this book free from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review.
