Book Review, “The Bishop’s Son,” Kelly Irvin author

The Bishop's Son cover

The Bishop’s Son, by Kelly Irvin, is the second book in The Amish of Bee County series. Like the first book, The Beekeeper’s Son, this book is a touching story. It is set in Bee County, Texas.

Leila Lantz has had feelings for Jesse Glick ever since her family moved to Bee County. Jesse, however, keeps his distance from Leila for reasons he prefers to keep secret. Jesse’s cousin Will has been trying to keep Jesse’s secret, but also has feelings for Leila. When Leila begins working at the daycare in town, circumstances work out that reveal that Jesse is considering leaving the Amish faith. He believes he can serve God more fully outside of the Amish ways, but he doesn’t want to force Leila to make such a decision. Leila finds herself needing to choose between Will, who is remaining Amish, or Jesse, who is leaving the only faith and family she has ever known.

I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were realistic, with traits that I could relate to in my own life. I especially liked Leila’s love for her family, and I was heartbroken for the mothers involved in the situation.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Amish Fiction.

I received this book free from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review.
