Book Review, “Misery Loves Company,” Rene Gutteridge author

misery loves company coverMisery Loves Company, by Rene Gutteridge, is full of suspense.  It definitely reminds me of a story one might see on Criminal Minds or Law and Order on television.

The novel tells the story of Juliet Belleno, Jules, who rarely leaves her home since her husband, Jason, was killed in the line of duty as a police officer.  Jules blogs from home, reviewing books and revealing bits of her life.  She is kidnapped by her favorite author one day at the grocery store after posting a negative review of his latest book.  He intends no harm, but instead wants to teach her a lesson about her writing/reviewing.  Chris, Jason’s former partner, investigates her disappearance, stumbling upon clues to Jason’s death in the process.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I appreciated the subplots of Jason’s murder case and Jules’ father’s alcoholism. However, I felt that the first two thirds of the book moved very slowly, while the last few chapters held most of the action.  In addition, the author never reveals how the kidnapping occurred, a detail I wished had been included.

I received this book free from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review.
