The Christmas Singing, by Cindy Woodsmall , is a charming story. It tells the tale of Mattie and Gideon, who grew up as childhood friends, began dating as teenagers at a Christmas singing, and became engaged to be married, but have broken off the engagement.
The story begins three years later in Ohio, where Mattie has a successful cake decorating business and is engaged to Sol, a safe man who will never break her heart. However, when her shop burns down, she finds herself returning to her parents’ home. Once there, she encounters Gideon again and must deal with difficult memories and feelings. When she discovers that he broke off their relationship because he had been diagnosed with cancer, she is devastated.
Cindy Woodsmall does a wonderful job of developing this story. The characters are loveable, causing you to wish they were real people. I like the emphasis on how the Amish people help each other out whenever possible.
If you have read The Sound of Sleigh Bells, you will recognize some of the characters from it. The Christmas Singing, however, can be read easily as a stand-alone book. I would recommend it to anyone who loves Amish fiction.
